Tube Painting

Advice please just trying turning Kirinite Pearl Blanks etc are there any guide lines when you need to paint the tubes . Thanks Glen

The bottom answer, for me anyway, is to paint anyway. Can't go wrong then....

I usually paint both the tube and the internal hole in the blank.

I always paint the hole, with a cotton bud..... If a very opaque colour then I'll do the tube also..... The One time you don't, you know it will show:pray::pray:

The colour you chose to use has a huge effect on the look of your blank when the pen is done. Take the blank and polish the end, doesn't have to be perfect, and then cut a thin slice off. 1 or 2 mm is enough. Now you can go around putting it on colours to get an idea of what a finished pen will look like. Spray bomb lids, coloured cardboard or paint chip strips from the paint store and more all work. You will be surprised at how one colour will make a blank pop and another makes the same blank look like yuck (can't use the proper term ). Don't overlook metallic paint either. Silver or gold for example. After you do a few you'll have a better idea of what paint colours you like using.

Do you have to use Acrylic Paint or will others do.Glen

I have used various types.... I work in a school..... I have used Plasticoat spray (spray into the cap then apply by brush:wink:) various acrylics paints,..... Some people use nail varnish.... Anything designed for painting plastic/ metal should work, leave to dry then glue up as normal..... It starts getting time consuming but if you batch your blanks it works out fine

One thing you can do is test a paint with the glue you want to use and see if there is a reaction. Take a little kitchen foil or a clean tart cup and put some paint on it. After it dries put the glue on top. If the paint reacts, dissolves, crinkles etc, you know not to use that paint and glue combination. It is the same process for checking the compatibility of casting materials if you ever decide you want to try blank making, labels, inks, paints etc with the resins.
