Turning Pear wood

I have just been given a large piece of pear, have you had any experience with this wood? It has just been cut from a tree from a local vicarage so i am hoping it has been blessed before i received it.
How long have i before it starts to crack etc and will i need to cover both sides of the cut?

Yes if the piece is still in log form and green , you should seal the ends as soon as it is cut.

I have turned pens from pear, but had nothing real big. I cut the log i had into pen blanks and waxed these for about a year before i started to turn them. Pear is very easy to turn and does come up very nice with friction polish and a wax finish.

Never would have thought about using pear to make a pen Jim, thanks for adding.

All fruit wood is valuable try counting the growth rings (tight as) drying after painting the ends can take time but worth every bit doing straight away. Be very careful with orchard Apple Wood the timber can be lethal with the spraying given in the past by real nasty sprays.
