Anyone know why the twist pens close as you write with the,. I know they lock out as you twist to open the pen and slightly drop back to lock, but as "i" write they gradually close.

Any particular kit Ken? Cheap slimlines are renowned for it, but you can upgrade the mechanism to stop it happening. Is it a slimline or a different kit?

Yes it's a slimline but I don't know what make unfortunatly.
It's the mechanism that is at fault Ken. It's not the fact that it's a Cross type mechanism per se, just that the quality of many of them is not good. You can buy Taiwanese upgrades to replace the Chinese mechanisms, which are a whole lot better.

The transmission needs to be pushed in a tad further in order for it to lock.

For new purchasers go for the Streamline kit ,the larger centre band advantage as well as a better winding mech (never had one from this kit unwind yet.) otherwise an after market winder is 1/3 of the whole kit cost here and equivalent in the UK.

Not sure I understand that Peter, as far as I know the mechanism on the streamline and slimline are identical.

They are but I never found windback with their kits ever,it occurred in the early days of Slimlines on me but not for a long time now. I used to buy Slimlines in the hundreds. My reference for better is when there is a semi locking feeling when fully extended,the change was made in manufacturing. Just my own experience one time I bought a hundred or two mechs of the improved type.I thought this was a problem from the past.

I'm still certain that the mechanisms come from the same factory lines for slimlines and streamlines and that is no difference whatsoever given that they originate from the same source. You'll find that the cheap kits, whether to buy from Timberbits in Oz or one of the dealers off ebay all come out of the same factories. So there are significant differences in quality between kits and the cheap ones are variable whichever kit you buy so pot luck.
I'm sure Walter and others have discussed the quality issues on here in the past. If I go to a supplier not too far from me I could buy cheap kits or pay more and buy the better ones which cost him more to buy in. "You pays your money and takes your choice"
As far as the wider centre bands are concerned you also have other options:
1) Buy a few streamline centre bands, they are cheap and easily available, you just swap the band from a slimline kit and having stock keeps your options open.
2). Turn the pen either with no centre band or glue on a contrasting material and turn it yourself. Plenty of examples on the forum if you search.

With respect Peter, I have to agree with Bob. The only difference between a slimline and a streamline from the same manufacturer, (which lets be honest, in the UK is 90% of the time from Rizheng) is the diameter of the centre band. There is no difference in the mechanism at all, and simply buying a streamline will not solve the problem per se.
If you want a better mechanism, you have to buy either a better kit, eg. Berea or PSI, both of which are Taiwanese, as opposed to Rizheng which are Chinese - or upgrade the mechanism to a Taiwanese one, such as the ones I linked to above on the Beaufort Ink website.
I'm not saying that every Chinese slimline or streamline exhibits the problem, but the fact remains that it IS a well known issue.

With a different clip and the broader band in the streamline I really prefer.I am using up 20 yrs and older Slims hang gold instead of dip gold, there are other choices. I write right handed Ken I am not sure how you hold,what pressure you apply,if the pen is for yourself I would dismiss your problems with Slimlines and buy one piece clicks from the owner of this forum that come highly recommended with larger biro and other good features.
Let us not forget China exists in mainland China and Taiwon.
