if you accidentally drill a blank off centre, slightly diagonally getting very near the edge but not quite to it, would you still turn it or bin it?:thinks:

I have in the past done this and got so close to the edge that it seem unusable but I built it up again with ca and sawdust and it turned out to be a very nice pen.

I would mount it on the mandrel, you will know then if its too close.

If it is to close to the edge cut a bit of and stick a longer contrasting bit on the other end and use it as a C B

Glue the tube in but leave it just under flush with the side that has the most central hole and you should be fine once its trimmed.

I guess there is no reason why you shouldn't if there is plenty of timber, but i will also throw in a suggestion ... Drill on the lathe ... :bwink:

I'm with Jim here I now always drill on the lathe, the few (3) that I have done on a pillar drill where all off centre but all were still used with no problems :thinks::thinks:

Me too.

I've never had one off centre since I switched to drilling on the lathe
