Voids in Burr

I've got a small quantity of Burr that I've cut into blanks, I tried turning one the other night and found that there's small voids in it that are full of (muck/bark/mud) not sure what but as I hit final size I had a chunk fallout so that I could see the brass tube.

I've not tried any of the last 3 pieces I have yet as I think it'll all have these small voids in, is there anything I can so with it or is it fire wood ? Will try and grab a photo later.

If you get some shellac sticks http://www.amazon.co.uk/Liberon-SFSL-Shellac-Stick-Light/dp/B000TAPC1I (Liberon are the better ones and there are many colours) you can use a small blowlamp (like chefs use for crème caramels etc) and gently melt some into the hole then get a small piece of metal and heat it up very hot ie screw driver or such (I use a 10cm metal rule) and gently iron down the shellac into the hole once the hole is filled then turn and sand it as you would normally. If you use a buffing system be aware that the shellac is slightly softer than the wood and so will abrade faster but once it is finally finished you can polish as normal. The shellac colours can be mixed to make lighter or darker colours. Shellac is exactly the same as in French polishing and so is an accepted woodworking filler. Best of luck

Take a guess
I agree with Ray, rough turn your blank then apply CA & filler of your choice to the voids, this is from a few years ago & was filled with Aluminium power.

The pen with Alu looks awesome ! I'll definitely have a look at this timber now and see what I can achieve with it :)

Many thanks everyone !

Depending on the amount of different colours already in the wood will depend on what colour sawdust you use. But I agree fill it with saw dust or metal powder.

Another couple using the powder

A lot of burrs have the same problem as yours and most will react in the same manner as yours did as has been suggested turn to round then fill the voids with dust of some sort with thin CA glue like sawdust, coffee powder, coal dust, charcoal, limestone, any metal powders the list is only limited by your imagination dont forget to stop your lathe often just to keep an eye on whats happening as after filling another void may appear
