A  lot of burrs have the same problem as yours and most will react in the same manner as yours did as has been suggested turn to round then fill the voids with dust of some sort with thin CA glue like sawdust, coffee powder, coal dust, charcoal, limestone, any metal powders the list is only limited by your imagination dont forget to stop your lathe often just to keep an eye on whats happening as after filling another void may appear
