Having looked long and hard at dust extraction the important thing I discovered is the size of partical that the unit filters . This charnwood wall mounted one only filters down to 5 microns which is fine for chippings but the harmful dust down to 0.5 microns will pass straight through the filter. I bought the charnwood w680 vacuum dust extractor which filters down to 0.5 and the chip type extraction is pretty useless for lathe work unless you have machines where the hose can connect directly to chip outlet. I use my extractor plugged into the bandsaw and I switch the hose over to a poseable extension by the lathe to catch as much of the dust whilst sanding

I'm going to look at some dust extraction in the near future although space is limited,is that one of the smaller units Jim?

It was what i was looking for when i built the lean-to Matty, having limited space ..

What about one that fits on the roof 'cos that's the only space I've got in my 'Kennel'.

It says it can be fitted under a worktop so I don't see why it can't be fitted to the roof, as lonf as you can reach it.

Can the human eye see particles that small?
If not then how do you know you have captured them in the sock and not your lungs.
Are these particles not in the air we breath in daily life, I am getting paranoid now, gotta buy a sleeping mask too init?
No sod, it just stop breathing that'll cure it and do a lot of people a good turn in the process.

How important is dust extraction to us turners? I don't have any setup since only just putting the new shed up,hoovering up all the dust and shavings once I've finished and wearing a P3 dust mask while in the shop is what I do at the minute.

Very important for your young lungs Matty, you only have one set init?
No good for me now the damage is done for us old gits, I smoked for 45 years sucking in all sorts of shit.
Insulted lofts with no protection, asbestos was everywhere when I was a kid. cut boards of MDF which is banned the world over except here.
That's just to name a few of the stupid things I have done

I have one similar to the one Jim linked t in his first post, but I mounted it on a portable trolley. This enables me to stand it outside on a nice day, I just may have to build it a little shelter to stand in if it is raining.

Matt, it is very important. You don't want to wait until it becomes a problem before getting some good protection. Masks and filters can be replaced... lungs are a bit more difficult.

Matt. Very important fella. I'm borderline asthmatic in so far I only need an inhaler on a really heavy cold couple of times a year were my capacity goes down to a third... I mean a third... So it makes me aware of a change etc, so when I first turned without a mask - knackered 12 hrs later. Those b and q type rubbish btw.

Couple of chaos here with some real horror stories. You wouldn't ride a motorbike without a helmet, I thinks is the same tbh.

I'll stick to wearing my half mask respirator then (Have P3 cartridges which are supposed to filter 99.85% of dust) and look at getting some extraction up.
