Managed a bit of time in the Shed today as the Puppy Proofing of the Garden is now complete.

This was a piece of old Knarly Walnut that I savaged from a log pile a while ago

It stands 8" tall and about 4" diam at its widest point. Couldn't make the walls too thin as there was something lurking in the inside that was making an awful row whilst hollowing it out.

I was tempted to fill them in with some copper or brass powder but I like you Alan thought that the cracks gave the piece some character.

Your Spot on Woody I had to leave the wall thickness fatter than I would have liked as the noises coming from it whilst hollowing scared the Shi*e out of me to be honest.

I tried to get the Mrs to have a go and finish off the hollowing but she was having none of it :nonono:

Very, very, nicely done Vic!
What hollowing tool do you have?

I have tried loads of different ones Neil but I suffer with Vibration White Finger and Arthritis (related to my mining days) and have found it difficult to do, especially if I wanted to go deep.

I eventually settled for a Lyle Jamieson Hollowing Rig which is a joy to use. Once set up I sit on my bar stool next to the lathe and can operate it with a couple of fingers with no risk whatsoever of a dig in. I have gone as deep as 14" but that was pushing it a bit without buying a beefed up tool bar.

Dont know about your Walnut mate but ours smell like something else while you turn it you deserve the George Cross for bravery in the face of that brute another one for suggesting to the wife she might care to finish it for you. In conjunction with others I am with you all leave it tough as it turns apart from sanding etc the knocking was warning enough for me possibly the timber saying thanks for saving me from the fire but enough is enough already.

Thanks for showing beaut vase:thinks::noway1::noway1::claps::thumbs::thumbs: mate.

Peter.
