Shopping around for water buffalo horm after a uk supplier anyone help?
I assume a lot of penturners would use this material.and have a source?
Would like it in its natural state for carving? need the thickness ,dont mind bulking it up if need be.:thinks:

If you pester me in a few days I'll try and remember who they were. A couple I used to know on the craft fair circuit - she was from Worcester, he was from Thailand, used to sell a variety of junk that his family and friends had made from horn and other far eastern detritus. I cant remember their names, I know they have a web site. I looked into using it for pens but it was fairly bland, stunk terrible when turned and was fairly hollow until the very tip, so all in all pretty useless unless you were blind and had no sense of smell.

water beffalo horn

Water buffalo horn is usually solid , ,a lot of stickmakers use it.like rams horn it can easily be shaped or bulked up by boiling it and pressng in a vice.It does stink if its fresh.I have seen some on ebay but missed them .small pieces can be shaped by using a electric paint stipper as a heat source

John Boddys in Boroughbridge had some in a few weeks ago.

I have a little bit left, horrible stinky stuff, bland as well. Not worth the stench for a pen.

Well there is a defective herd roaming the Far Eastern plains or wherever they roam, cause these things that I had my mitts on at a craft show in Newmarket were hollow, either that or someone had been practising root canal work on them?

Thanks for your help have found a source
They sell buffalo scale as well ideal for penmaking the size is 6"x2"x 3/4" althought you can get over 1" thick.also sell i" thick dowel blanks
i have some solid rams horn dont know if pen turners use it ,but both horn looks good on sticks and polish well and unlike acrylic its warm to touch and light
they dont smell :thinks:
