Hi all,

My daughter is getting married this August.:winking:

I am going to turn her a pen for signing the register and obviously to keep afterwards. Am looking for a good quality kit.

I have already bought a lovely 'ivory' acrylic blank, but what pen kit?

The 'Memsaab' has told me that it must be a rollerball, silver/rhodium but not gold and must have a lid.

Any ideas ?

Thanks

As far as I know, you will not be allowed to use a Rollerball to sign the register, I think it is Fountain Pen only and only with permission and Registrar's Ink. The Majestic fountain pen or Majestic Jnr FP. Phill's new Mistral, although that may be gold.

Check up with the registra David.

I have dealt with quite a few and you will find it will need to be registrar ink. A rollerball will have standard in in the pen.

Having said that, I came across a vicar only a few years ago that didn't even know that they should use registras ink.

If you find that you have to use a fountain pen then make sure you clean the ink out afterwards as it's very aggressive and will rust everything on a very short period of time.

As for pen kit, it may change once you have found out it's got to be special ink..

As a retired registrar / church minister there are laws in place as to the type of ink you can use as the records are intended to last forever so as Eamonn said you must first ask the registrar if its OK to use your own pen and for some ink also as Eamonn sid your pen will need a good clean out after not just emptying but a good wash out

David pens make great additional wedding presents suitable and certainly appropriate timber would be some of that Olive wood you purchased recently.

Just phoned a friend in the know.

Seems a few things have changed, but it all depends on the Registra. So check with them first.

Provided the ink is to iso 12757 2, and agreed to be used by the Registra then and you can prove its the correct ink then they should agree.

However, it would be good to talk to the Registra to see what type of pen they use. They may well have a rollerball in the correct ink that they can supply the refill for you.

They are moving with the times and agree that document ink to the above standard is suitable.

Hope this helps..

Thanks to you all, didn't realise the register was such a problem.

Will check with the Registra.

That said and done, I will still make the pen as a gift, if just to lay beside the register.

Are there any further suggestions as to the kit to use ?

ISO 12757-2 is the standard applicable to paste based ballpoint inks, not water based rollerball inks although it needs to have a "DOC" at the end. It's the -2 DOC part of it that is relevant because that's the part which deals with the inability to tamper with the writing and its longevity on the page. Rollerball inks are covered by ISO 14145, which is not tamper proof and its longevity is not sufficient to sign a public record.

If Eamonns information is correct and inks conforming to 12757-2 DOC are allowed, (which I also believe to be true) you will be able to sign the register with a compliant ballpoint (such as the Beaufort parker style or the Beaufort cross style) but you will not be able to use a rollerball, as by their very nature none of them are -2 DOC compliant.

It's a subject quite close to me.

Therefore it is either ballpoint or fountain pen filled with registrars -2 DOC compliant ink, which is not water based, and will f8ck up your pen if not washed through.

I made my own wedding pen set, fountain and roller ball Roman Harvests. Fountain pen for the signing the register. and the rollerball for the guest book in the evening.
The Registrar will need to see the pen and be happy it hasn't been used before. I'd go for a fountain pen if I was you, Civil Servants can be very "Jobs Worth".
If they give you the go ahead. Make sure the ink is washed out of the pen as soon a possible. The permanent ink used has a higher iron content that regular ink and will rust the nib of the pen.

I have done a few Wedding Pens and my choice would be the Roman Harvest or if you want a smaller pen the TM Alpha

Definitely check with the registrar first. Recently I wanted to provide one for a friends wedding but hit a brick wall with the registrar, they wouldn't even invite the conversation of using a pen which wasn't theirs, citing the specific ink that must be used and the damage it would cause. Despite providing links and information that I'm well aware of the ink required, and the alternative inks certified to ISO archival standards, along with an indication that being a fountain pen collector and user of these 'damaging' (no modern iron gall is truly damaging compared to the older ones) inks that I was aware of the concerns they wouldn't even discuss it further.

On the nature of a FP kit... I like the TM Omega and the look of Roman Harvests.

I made a wedding pen but it wasn't used for the register, instead we had a Guest book and they all signed with the pen.

Thanks all, for the invaluable information and advice.

The pen will be placed (if good enough) with the register for photos and then be used for the guest book.

Have ordered both the Majestic and the Roman harvest, will let memsaab choose, over the years I have found it easier that way !:rolling:

Thanks again
