Wee commission for Macallan whisky barrel Sierras

A distillery manager (good man to know) wanted a few whisky barrel oak pens to give out to customers. Finished these this evening. I thought I'd include a wee slice of barrel stave with 'The Macallan' written on it. I've done the slices but I still need swmbo (the pyromaniac) to do the written work!

Drilling and turning barrel staves gives off a lovely aroma by the way. It does make me thirsty though!

Oak's a bit plain for my usual tastes but I do like a dram! Usual finish - 20 coats of CA then wet sanding. A display box would be nice but I'm going for velvet pouches (cheap!).

Excellent Ralph. Top catch with the distillery manager..

Well turned and a great idea with the pyrography as well..

I have turned a few whiskey barrels pens, and agree they certainly smell superb..

As I have said before on the forums about whiskey barrel shaving, don't throw them away, save them till summer months, soak them in a little water then chuck them on your BBQ.. (Drain water off first tho:mooney2:) Stunning flavour to your burger..

Nice pens, and the stave idea is a great touch.

I'm sure I saw some "authentic certificates" kicking around on the web for these somewhere :thinks:

Maybe you could do your own and let the distillery sign them ?

All you need is a document signed by the distillery and you can make and sign your own certs as made by

Many thanks for the comments lads. Most people who get bespoke pens are over the moon but then they don't know the mucking about we go through to make them! It's good to get a boost from people that know what's involved.

I did think of pyro-ing the barrels (personalising by adding a name, the whisky or something?) trouble is that swmbo says its difficult as they are cylinders and it's difficult to write that small. Hence the plaques. What I will try, something that I have seen on this forum with Eucalyptus, is a cross cut or angled cut to produce a more stripy finish.

I only do it for the few quid extra to buy more raw materials really.

To think, the people I got the barrel staves off were going to use them as firewood! They live near the cooperage.
