Yep it happened ,the Snakewood used on the RH last week succumbed to the stresses of nature and split asunder. Looking at the continuation across both cap and barrel I'm thinking that the split was already there before I started to turn the blankety blank. Any hows I had a spare set of RH tubes and changed it's overcoat to Beefwood .

Real shame mate. I agree that the crack had to have been there already.
Still gorgeous pens though

Well done Ed that is a problem a lot of people have with snake wood it can take weeks before a split occurs it only take a small amount of heat build up for it to happen personally I think the wood is over rated and your salvage job is even better

Every cloud, Ed...and that's a real scorcher of a silver lining! I think your pen look brilliant - well done, matey!

Don't ditch that snakewood! Instead, wait until you create some matching dust (or use the beefwood dust!) and fill in the crevasses with thin CA. It'll look real good when sanded. Still, you know all this already, right, Ed? LOL!

Bob.

Nice recovery with the pen Ed, and I agree with the others, that Beefwood is very nice indeed.. I have had a Snakewood on a Baron pen, the clip end cracked within a few days, the bottom blank has cracked now, but i can't tell you when it did as i only saw it a few months ago, but it was well over a year before it did crack ..

I have recently turned a RH and Sedona in Snakewood, too scared to sell it because of the splitting problems.
Its Been 6 weeks now and still not split .
Your beefwood RH is very nice, well turned and a great looking pen .

:claps::claps:Using the RH kit invites problems thats a mighty big drill when turned there is not much meat left only a thinnish covering and IMHO that holds good for any timber used on this kit. Just finishing:thumbs: off one now my first. Selecting another favourite in Beefwood was a master stroke it is striking, very well turned and presented, impressive.

Kind regards Peter.

I do like the beefwood better... I had a similar problem with kingwood, that split once it had been brought in the house and dried out..:sob:

Thats a shame there ED, but a brilliant recovery mate..:thumbs::thumbs:
Had another look and that Beefwood looks brilliant....well turned

Do you still have the split blanks as I thought it might be recoverable - clean out the crack and fill with either Ali or Brass Powder and CA. Just a thought.....:bwink:

Yes Rowdy , Bob has already mentioned doing that ...I used to be into mineralogy in a big way and have lots of mineral specimens hanging around so I might just crush some up and see what I get . Looks like a trip to the attic soon.

If you do Ed a little tip go for something darker than the wood its an old French polishing trick when filling scratches with wax
