The best lathe is the one in front of you... Don't look at others or you'll just get upset

Enjoying my Vicmarc VL150 I have others. Exclusively I would not choose to buy a direct drive lathe any probs thats it for turning expensive replacement. Now silly thought no answer required which car now you see its openended all personal opinion.

I was taught on Wadkin lathes & if I had room would have one now. Richard Findley sold his Jet & got a Wadkin which he is happy with.
I was also taught that any lathe is only as good as your ability to use it.

I have the Maxi 1 and wouldn't swap it for anything . It does everything I have asked it to do and in the 5 years that I have had it it has never let me down

We have a crystal polishing workshop at work which I clean, in an old workshop at the back which is now a store room is a treasure trove of old tools and kit.
Including a wood lathe, planner thicknesser and table saw all Wadkin and a very interesting huge old metal lathe made by Monarch, keep meaning to research it.
Not allowed cameras at work or it would have been shown already.
I am slowly working my way through the store and mentally cataloguing it all.

Here's a nice deal for someone?????

WE had in our club a professional wood turner who used a cheap cheap head stock and tail stock on a rickety base turned huge quantities of Ballustrades etc and 12 foot long posts the first one he would sit loose in front and turn the rest almost identical. His pulleys he turned from wood. All with a skew chisel rarely needed sanding. He was a journey man turner when tech courses were valid with his employer.
