I realise that everyone will have their own opinion and very different experiences but I have the chance of getting a new lathe but am just unsure what to purchase. My first thought was the Record Power CL4 with stand but I have heard of bad experiences with the motor on these. So if you had a budget of £1300 to spend on a lathe and chucking system what would you recommend to a guy who is relatively new. Given that he would not be able to upgrade for many years as he cannot work. You must be able to sit at the lathe and it has to have a headstock which can turn 90 degrees and reverse mode. :rolling:

I would probably go for a decent 2nd. hand lathe and also a metal lathe, but I suppose it depends what you yourself are into.

I have never used this lathe John but a lot of people recomend it http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-trade-series-at1628vs-woodturning-lathe-502703 tell them you want it to turn stuff for horseback and Help fpr heroes they may give you a discount

I have this lathe that Woodies link goes to and IMHO it is great. Weighs a ton (won't move), very quiet, variable speed that is really responsive. I do from pens to platters on this without any problem.
I do see that they are showing out of stock but always worth calling Axminster head office.

Hope that helps.

Personally, I would not touch the CL4. Had tooooo many problems with it. Drive shafts snapping (2 of them). The head stock and tail stock never lined up. (had a new head stock put on - still didn't line up).

Noyt allowed to buy second hand because of who is funding it.

Then it's best to give Axminster a ring if the lathe Woody linked to is what you go for and see if you can get a discount or at least a chuck and some jaws thrown in. Good Luck.

I have purchased some tools from axminster. Someone called me to discuss my needs and during the conversation he asked what jobs I had in the past. Once I told him my story he immediately offered discount and threw in a few extra bits and pieces. Record power sent me their carving chisels for free. They found out about me through help for heroes as they donate items to them and Chris who runs the woodworking shop there showed them some of my turnings and carvings when they went to have a look at the set up there.

If you do not like getting stuff mail order and don't mind a wee trip I would visit MacGregor Industrial Supplies Ltd - Inverness they have a few new Lathes think I saw the new Jet Lathe there don't ask me what model as I was trying to be disinterested as I retire soon and do not want to part with anymore money I would give Dave MacGruer a call he can also get Axminster stuff.

Well Inverness is only about a 2 hour drive and my wife is always getting onto me about going up for the day. I could always sneak in a trip to MacGregors by telling her its a new clothes retailer. Once ther I just bluff it...lol:wink:

I have the one that Woody links too. Had it a couple of years now. Although not used much recently but it's very good and sturdy.

I also had the stand and the bed extension kit as well:thumbs::thumbs:

I know Terry (no1 plonker ) also has the same lathe..
