I'm planning to sell some of my blanks to raise money for a pen press and was thinking £10 for a mixed selection of oak, cherry, walnut, maple, spalted beech, mahogany, spalted laurel, tulipwood, lacewood and spalted poplar. Is that too much? Not enough? what would you pay? All are at least 120mm x 19mm x 19mm.

I've seen native timber being sold for 50p a blank, I personally wouldn't pay that for it but I suppose it depends where you are selling it, are you thinking of EBay?

Just list a bundle for what you'd be happy to get for them & see how you get on.

Personally I give away plenty of native wood that is suitable for pens because I couldn't store what is effectively waste, as do a few cabinet makers I know, they are just happy for folks to take their scrap away rather than pay to dispose of it themselves.:nooidea:

i think that eBay is a non starter, you will get next to nothing, and spend ages packing and posting. Then somebody will claim not to have received them and have that to deal with.

why not make a press. I am making one based on this Pen Press

You could make it from what you have and it wouldn't cost anything much other than time. Or make it as fancy as you want.

Amazing how we know how to buy but hesitate when we sell knowing the timber showing the result from selected blanks. My personal experience when someone sells from their stash its best to be dispassionate offer them at a reasonable price if on E Bay lets call it a fair price. On the other hand if you had said giving these away you would have been confronted with so many requests. Wish you well mate.

It's very much a case of trying to sell wood which a lot of turners find easy to obtain for free Mick.
After a lot of research I will be selling 22x22x 130mm Olive blanks for about £1 each, but only available in multiples of 10 to minimise postage costs!
I will offer a discount for forum members but going too low will be like cutting my own throat. Timber cost + cutting + seasoning soon adds up!

Hi Mick. If you fancy making a pen press instead of selling some blanks. I used a 'toggle clamp', very simple to put together with a couple of bits of ply and the clamp.

Just search on ebay for the clamps. Good luck!
