Some friends are celebrating their 20th anniversary today, so I thought I'd make them a 'simple' kit pen as a gift. Selected a TB Sr Gent, then thought about how I might jazz it up a little. Although I'm having some hassle with my CNC machine the 4th (rotary) axis is still fine, so I got the 'bright' idea to do a 'spiral wrap' around the pen barrel. Four attempts later we have this:

Spiral Wrap.jpg

The wood is a lovely piece of Spanish Olive from Neil Lawton (Thanks Neil!) which is equally lovely to work with and smells of olives to boot.

I wouldn't do text like this in future - it just looks drab. However, the idea would work well with a vine motif or the like. For those with a 4th axis wanting to try it, depth of cut is critical. Too deep and you go right through the brass tube, too shallow and you turn the design away as you approach the required diameter.

One more word of thanks - this spiral wrap is only possible because of some software I got from Paul Middleton. Thanks Paul - it's opened up a new horizon!

Hmmm interesting init?

Brian, you say so much while saying so little! That's a skill, my friend! :frenchkiss:

Con you engrave the pens after you have finished them?

It's possible Mark, but would take some accuracy. Also, if you finish the pen with CA and then cut through the finish with a rotary bit, the edges of the CA finish turn white. Given the risk of cutting too deep and ruining all the work I'm probably not brave enough to try it!

Ok. I'll expand, I do find it very interesting in as much as that is a hell of a code string to figure out.
Which I guess is where the new found software comes into play

There is a new version of cnclinux out, as of end last month with Wheezy 7 behind it.
I have installed it in the shed but as that mocheene is also a pxe deployment server it has taken some rather difficult (for me) configuring.
I am almost there with the old hdd in a lappy to retrieve my settings, good ol linux works on anything init?

Seeing this has put my tiny brain in overdrive as to how to rig up the A axis again, I took it off when I used the spring loaded punch with success.
I have enough kit to build another mocheene but not enuff room or enthusiasm.
My cnc use has been mainly producing stencils of late, I haven't really punted myself for work in shed, keep meaning to but once again no arse init?

Mate, I wasn't criticising! I knew you wouldn't like it (mostly because I didn't, and you and I think scarily alike) but your post was very tactful. Glad your juices are flowing again (metaphorically speaking), I look forward to more of your genius on display soon.

What a cracking piece of enginnearly David, just shows what a great help we all are on the forum and create improvements for us all.

I like the idea and I believe the pen looks superb if you like that kind of thing.. If fact is is superb and seen nothing like it on here before

The worrying thing is that you and Grump think alike..

Yeah scary init?
It's not that I dislike it cos I don't, (If I don't like it David I have no qualms about telling you init?).
You always impress me with the technical abilities you show and I love the way you figure things out and overcome obstacles.
This pen is no less impressive for those reasons, not because its a good fit or finish which of course it is.
But because of the unique way in which you have risen to the challenge and produced a technical breakthrough not previously seen in these forums.
My lid is firmly dipped to you sir.

Changing the subject, I think that Brian should write a book... something like 'The Art of Grumpish' or 'Woodturning Init?'

Belter David it sure is a wrap to treasure IMHO the Olive was the masterstroke.

Paul your part in the plan did not go unnoticed either quite an enabler..
