Sodding hole - it's got a lot to answer for!!

What's it for? No idea. Hanging it up to dry may be? Tuning it if you want to use it as a xylophone?

My best serious guess is that it's got something to to with shatter-proofing the casting.

Well thanks for that Phil.

God knows why it would not appear when I attached it... started out as a daft “oh I will ask the great and the good of the world what it’s for” and it turned into a marathon posting .... let’s see if anyone knows it’s bugging me so I have asked Axminster to! See if they know seeing they made it

The only I'd add about the whole saga is that the rest that came with my 1418VS has one, but wait for it... it's on the other side :noway1:

How on earth am I meant to use it to its full potential now? I mean, back to front, upside down, it's a shocker.

A collar inserts through the hole with a set screw on the side through which passes a round-ended rod which serves as a depth gauge in order to square your rest to the face of the work. There should be one on each side of the post.

(No - that's a load of crap. Just made it up. Call the company!)

Hi guys

The Answer is:

Dear Mr Mcalister

I am pleased to inform you that I have been investigating your query 434376 and now have extra information.

I have checked with our woodturning tutors and they have advised me that this hole has no use for the user as such. It is part of the manufacturing process and used when the tool rest is being powder coated.

I hope this helps and if I can be of any further assistance please contact me.

Kind regards

FYI - The response from the company wasn't as good as mine.

Kevin - Go with the "depth gauge concept." That at least sounds intentional and has some integrity. (Now turn the bowl. Enough procrastinating!)

There are other products out there with inexplicable holes in them too. Does your tool rest taste minty by any chance?

I have to say the top of your tool rest looks a bit rough Kevin. The first thing I did to mine was to sand it down with fine wet and dry to remove the paint and make it nice and smooth. I then gave it a coat of microcrystalline wax. It’s something that needs doing once in a while. These types of rest are often a very nice shape for your finger to slide along underneath as you turn but being fairly rough cast iron often benefit from the wet and dry treatment here as well.

I’ve just been out to do a bit of wood turning and noticed my AT1416VS rest also has a hole but it’s on the other side! :whistling:

What’s it for again? ...
