Now we all agree the segment kit is poor but whats wrong with it.
Is it the point , the bands, the clip, the segments or just the whole lot.
I am asking this as I am thinking of trying to make a different pen using some of the parts but cannot make mind up which parts to use, if any.

I would try the bin test first LOL only kidding the trouble is all the fittings are quite bulky so I would try leaving the centre band out on the business end of the pen and maybe try making the wood a bit more bulky in the middle by bringing it up to the same size as the top end and taper down to the nib or try a bit of segmenting in place of the C/B just a thought mate hope it helps good luck with them look forward to seeing what you do

Show us a pic of the kit and I'll tell you what to throw away.
On second thoughts save yourself the time and bin the whole lot init?
Put it down to experience.

Having said that there are a lot of people out there with no idea of taste style or quality, look through the forums to see many examples.
Make them all up and give them to the kids to play with, someone will think they're worth stealing.
Or put them on a stall and offer a bogof on them.

The problem with it as I see it, apart from the twin centrebands, which just don't fit in with modern perceptions of a ballpoint pen, is the the components all look, well, Chinese. I don't mean from a quality point of view, I mean from a cultural point of view. Think chinese architecture, festivals, objet d'srt, even street markets and so on, and the kit oozes it. Fine if you're in China, but western tastes don't generally seem to buy in to the same ethos. There is another kit out there, called a Lancer, which suffers from exactly the same problem.

Establishing what you like in a kit is personal what I choose you may not like down to you. Which car do you choose why? etc down to you. The house you live in.

With regard to pen kits many firms have made up examples to guide you and work sheets to aid in the making.I have no clue where Southport is perhaps there are markets you can attend where pens are sold, a wood group you can join I will look later on a map but in the forum ideas should abound that ma y help you.
