I would try the bin test first LOL only kidding the trouble is all the fittings are quite bulky so I would try leaving the centre band out on the business end of the pen and maybe try making the wood a bit more bulky in the middle by bringing it up to the same size as the top end  and taper down to the nib or try a bit of segmenting in place of the C/B just a thought mate hope it helps  good luck with them look forward to seeing what you do
