Well I've only bought a few so far and I've get mine from Axminster as the Warrington store is only a 20 minute drive away. I'm sure I will use other suppliers in due course.
However I'm interested that Doug and Terry buy from Timberbits in Australia. Do you guys buy in bulk? What about import duty, taxes etc?

If you're clever and keep it under the 150 AUD mark then you will most probably get away with it.

The "risk" is in using their express carrier, (TNT I think) they will most probably end up charging you the VAT and duty (8%).

Most of us use the "free" shipping option for over 80 AUD (easily spent lol) and wait for the 2-3 weeks the Aussie post takes to get here, MUCH safer ;)

Timberbits are great to deal with, very responsive via email, and if there's ever anything wrong, they put it right pdq in my experience.

Get shopping !

When I stared I bought all of my kits from penkitsuk or funetunz on ebay. They both give a very good service and nearly always next day delivery. I progressed to others including Turners Workshop and nowadays TimberBits as well. I still buy from all of them all depending on what I want. Slimlines are ebay. Another site I've used is pencraftsuk who have a variety of kits.

Sorry Alex but not quite true, import duty is chargeable at rates between 3and9% on values over £135. Vat is payable on goods over £18 regardless of whether they are shipped by the despatcher tax free or vat paid. Sadly and rather cynically the import tax rate (which is charged at the whim of her dependant on the consignment description) is applied to the valuation first and then vat charged on that cumulative amount! Thanks, taxed on tax! Additionally depending on the shipper you can also get charged for using the carriers deferment account where they pay the tax and then recoup it from you, or in the majority of cases of shipments from the states the Royal Mail will charge you £8 for processing it through customs but hold it until you pay up. Because the couriers pay the tax first and they are not tax assessors import duty is rarely applied, but the Royal Mail packages are all assessed by hmrc in person and so you will get clobbered from the states if the sender uses us priority mail which is then routed via royal mail

Having said that sometimes you get away with it.

But we don't want to publish on open forums the ways that is achieved!

None of em, if somebody wants to buy a kit I will happily make it up for them.
I have enough stock of old rubbish to use before deciding whether to continue buying crap or not.

Timberbits is what I use now, usually ordering 30 slimlines and making the rest of the order up with fountain pens.

I used pen kits UK for a while, the proceeds go to charity too!

I'll have to have a look at the Timberbits website. I guess I could get them to ship to my sister in Adelaide and she could then send them to me as a "Gift"

Now there's a good idea you could order as much as you like then and have no worries

TBH I have brought many from all over the world.

But over the last 5 years I have been buying from CSUSA, yes there is import taxes to pay and VAT to pay, so what, its the quality of the kits I have become to really appreciate..

I still have loads of cheapie kits that I purchased quite a few years ago but got to the stage as though I couldn't be bothered to make them, if I do then they are usually give a ways to charity for raising money or the grandson to learn pen making.. you just don't realise how many a child can get through..
