I don't no expert dad but until they come along I would suggest it's all to do with light.
You have lights on in tent countering the image balance the camera sees. do you have flash on auto?
give them some info to work on init?
I do love these woods dad nice to see your gout is good enough to let you out.

I think that Peter would probably be better at explaining it than me Woody but I think its to do with reflected light and the tent removes the direct light that the shine needs to show through. But that might be a load of rubbish.

very nice pen Woody, in the past I've got over the problem you mention using an led torch, move it around until you see the shine in your viewfinder then go for it, it works for me when I remember to do this

I think it is a combination of the angle your camera was at, the photos outside the tent look like they are more oblique than those inside the tent and the positioning of the lights/object. I seem to remember that you have had highlights on the wood which you have had in the tent, which means something has changed. Try bringing the pen forward and look through the camera, if you don't see the highlight then try lowering or raising the camera angle and if you still don't see it then try the same thing again, but this time move the pen further to the back. once you have found the highlight make a mental note where the pen lies in the tent and try to keep your pens in that area. Have your lights been moved? Do you have a top light?

Are your lights positioned, angled and pointing in the same way as you did in the beginning? Once you get the result you want remember the angles of everything.

Woody, the tent diffuses the light and reduces the reflections which is what it is designed to do. At the risk of starting a debate on photography I have stopped using a light tent, I just put things on a white background and position the lights carefully to get the reflections and shadows where I want them.

Nicely made pens, shine showing or not.

Two great pens Woody. Glad to see your gout has eased up enough to allow you into the shed

Doug. The wood was given to me by a friend who is a Tree Surgeon in Lancashire and he told me it was "London Pride Burr" which had been sitting around their yard for about 12 months.
