ok, curiosity has finally got the better of me and it needs to be satisfied..
i see lots of piccies that people put up, generally in facebook groups, of their lathe setups...a lot of them show their tools hanging on a wall behind the lathe, meaning one would have to reach over the big spinny thing to change tools, or wait for said spinny thing to stop spinning so a tool change can be accomplished...is there a particular reason people do this?
not being the workshop police or anything, just curious :thinks:

I have mine like that. I tend to get the tools required for the task at hand and lay those on the bench to my right. It is only when I stop a task and realize that I need another but at that stage the lathe has been stopped to look at the piece. Space is another reason even though I now have a larger workshop I have already filled the walls up with stuff. The different tools for the metalworking lathe also has the tooling on a shelf behind that as well.

I think it's space too, when stood in front of a lathe a big empty space behind (as we tend to have them in front of a wall) crys out storage..... Personally I store my blanks behind the lathe and tooling/ chisels to the right:thumbs::thumbs:

I too have things behind the lathe but not my tools. As has been said, it’s space or lack of it that means every spare wall or shelf has to be utilised.
