should the grain be aligned when posted or when closed ?

I align them when they are closed. With twist pens I align them with the nib out.

Always nib extended one piece, slims extended, two piece closed. Force of habit I like to see the nib out when photographing more complete IMHO.

I agree with everyone which is unusual but then I don't care, it fits where it touches init?
