Hi All, I was at a timber yard today looking for off cuts and came across a pile of 50mm x 50mm spindle blanks and the guy said that they have been there for so long that nobody knew what they were, so he gave me one to play with I'm hoping for some assistance with the collective knowledge on this site.

1 spindle blank
2 ripped into 1/4 s
3 a quick pen turned

Looks like quite a bit of sapwood did it have a distinctive smell at all :thinks:
no, nothing noticeable, when ripping it the dust was more red than the wood looks.
My thoughts are it could be Black Limba from what I've looked at so far.
Thanks for the suggestions, I am familiar with both Zebrano and coincidently also got a 1m x .5m x 75mm slab of Meranti (for large bowls) and it's defo not either of them.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this @Duncs ?
Phil, no, not really, I've not seen anything other than the Black Limba mentioned above. I guess I'll call it case closed unless any better suggestions come to me. It turns really nicely and finishes well.
