Inspired by Neil Lawton I needed to get to the shed straight after work tonight to have a go on my newly delivered stain and thinners. No measuring was done with the thinners/stain just a pippet (long 7mm tube) of thinners and a few drops of stain till it had a good colour. Neil had used Sycamore and so I thought Sycamore Root would be good. I also have plenty of Hornbeam that is the same colour as Sycamore and a bit bland. I was very dissapointed with the Sycamore, the stain didn't want to soak into the grain but the Hornbeam just went... well WOW. I will try normal Sycamore later because it obviously is good as Neil has shown and maybe a bit of Holly as well.

Here is one person that didn't like staining... converted

Sycamore at the top and Hornbeam at the bottom.

Only just a smidge of blue can be seen in the Sycamore as you say Paul, but that Hornbeam certainly comes to life my friend ..

Nice attempts, Paul. As you say the sycamore seems to just have a bit of 'dirty' blue smudging here and there. The hornbeam looks good, just wondering what the dark blotches are up near the clip in the second pic?

I'm still not convinced about this staining lark, some looks OK, but the sycamore just doesn't look natural to me. Otherwise, nice pens Paul, as usual.:down:
