I just turned a couple of boxes one with the red texture on the lid and the apple one. I am trying to ID the wood any ideas. below is the two boxes and the bark of the tree

Thank you Neil will check it out. This was some that was chopped down in a friends garden by a woodturner of all things He said it is no good for turning. I found it turned great and finished well

Hmmm, interesting. The bark certainly does have a look of some the decorative garden maples but I've never seen such regular radial banding in any pale timber, let alone maple. You didn't get a look at leaf did you, that would help enormously.
ID from a photo is rarely easy as the senses of touch and smell can't be used and even vision is limited. Feel free to send chunk to me (about 125x55x18mm) and I'll work on it.

Don't know what the wood is Derek, but i do know that i am looking at two nice pieces of art my friend .. :thumbs:
