Woodturning Club night tomorrow

It’s that time again and this month we are supposed to make and take a platter.. for critique.

(Are you [MENTION=603]Bill Mooney[/MENTION] going tomorrow?)

So here is my 2nd ever attempt at such a thing..


Online critique welcome... depending on that I might just go to the pub.

OK let start with the bad parts.

It looks quite deep to the diameter for a platter. As platters are shallow and on the larger size in diameter. I personally would have made the rim narrower and the bowl section not so deeply cut where it joins the rim. On the bottom there are what appear to be either tool or sanding marke down near the foot

Maybe not what you were looking for but that is just my observations It is a little difficult to get a true veiw in comparison to seeing it in the flesh

Now the good side.

I like the ogee shape to the outside if it was a bowl. The turning look pretty good except what I mentioned above and you have got a nice even finish so not al is lost enter and see what your club judges say.

Good luck all the same at least you have had a go which is more than some members in clubs can say. I also hope that you do get some good marks. I judge our beginner section at our club and sometimes have to hold back on the marking so as not to put them off.

I hope what I have put does not in anyway put you off entering.

Thanks for the feedback... thankfully it’s not a competition, just every month we are challenged with making an item that is listed and to bring it along for critique so there are no prizes or awards just hopefully helpful comment and for the likes of me learnings to take away.

I really enjoyed making this today and in just doing that learned more about using the tools and the lathe.

All good fun.

Beaut defition in your bowl. Hands on you will do well. Clubs can take a narrow approach re base finishing etc ,your platter will sit well,I like the rim shape lets know the feeling on the night.

I think the last three words that you put sum it up nicely( All good fun ). Please let me know what they think of it. I am in the process of turning 20 items for our club some will have obvious faults some not so as well as some with no faults (well I hope) this will be to do a demonstration and add a little fun competition.

Nice job well done :thumbs: A little too deep for a platter and the rim a bit wide (but what do I know) if you like it that's what matters :thumbs:
