Along with this months excellent magazine i had a free copy of the 1st edition to celebrate 25 years....wow...its actually a good read in itself....nice to see a few proper men with proper beards and big old cast iron lathes...
I am just off to place my order with Axminster...they have some cracking prices on some chisels:whistling:

I enjoyed reading the old mag as well Mark, especially the adverts. I think some of the prices, in real terms have actually come down in the last 25 years.
£100 in 1990 equates to around £225 these days

I found the old issue facinating too. What is rather salutory is the number of once famous UK names in the ads that have vanished. Its not just nostalgia, look how we struggle with quality now. It was not always the case but at some point we lost the plot and I guess that is what killed those businesses. I know there are a few good exceptions, we should try and hang on to them for all we are worth.

That's what I saw as well Allen and not just UK companies.
I was just leaving the industry at around that time and we were selling hand tools, power tools and machinery as well as our Dexion racking, graphic and display products and semi finished plastics (strange mix of products but all separate departments of my branch).
Many of our suppliers have gone and even the company I worked for which had branches all over the UK went to the wall a few years after I left. (So wasn't my fault :whistling:)

I fondly remember Kity machinery and Startrite when it was the original quality. Elu and DeWalt when even though owned by B&D was damn good stuff and likewise much of the tooling before it was swallowed up by the big boys and diluted by chiwanese imports.
