Woodworking Clubs - would you join one, are you in one?

I have the opportunity this week to join a local woodworking club. Now, as a turner, I'm a kind of solitary object, perhaps not very sociable when working. I can see that joining a club with a fair amount of kit, some much bigger than kit I have, would be an advantage but what's the view out there? Joiners, not on your nelly or already in?

I first went to a club in Kings Lynn and well it was so secretive and no one wanted to share how they did things I tried it for a few months and gave up then I tried the Spalding club and stayed there till I moved they were a great bunch always sharing what they were doing new projects and tools they were so helpful and wood was on sale every other month at fantastic prices and to be honest I loved it there now I have moved and after settling in I went to the local club well about 30min away and it was completely the opposite very clicky no one spoke I tried to introduce myself to no avail but to crown it all the person doing the demo was a complete idiot so that was the last time I went along to them
So my point is some clubs are very good some are not so good and some are like the secret service but you will never know unless you try good luck and happy turning

I have looked in on a few but seen nothing that interests me other than a good fight with some old bruiser at the end of the evening, I would rather go to the pub for that and get drunk in the effort.
From what I have seen they are all a load of know all's well so am I and we clash init?

There isn't one near where I live (40 miles I think is the nearest) and like you I am rather a solitary person (unsociable according to the wife and daughters!!!) but I have thought it would help me to go and try one or two.
Where abouts is the one you are going to Ralph & what time does it start ?
Although I live in South Lanarkshire I actually work in Bathgate.

I joined one last March and went along once a month for the monthly meeting night for about 6 months then gave up. Most were quite clickish and on the meeting night you sat there and watched and paid for some so called professional turn a bowl.
Hardly inspiring !!!!

Steven - small world - I work in Bathgate too!

It's the Broxburn Woodcraft Club Broxburn Woodcraft Club. I sent a request in to have a visit and a look around in about November last year. They seem to be pretty full and don't have many intakes of new members. Its on most every day and very popular apparently. I've seen them a couple of times at the Scottish Wood & Power tool show in October. From what I can gather turners make up the bulk of the membership but they also have instrument makers, furniture makers, stick makers etc.

I think that's primarily what's bothering me. Every club I've been in from sub-aqua, shooting, sports have always ended up the same with a small number of dedicated doers doing the work and a load of others especially in the shooting club 'doing a Panda' (eats shoots and leaves).

BTW when I say I 'work' in Bathgate I should really say that in between doing the crossword, generally skiving and avoiding it, I work in Bathgate.

I joined one when I started turning to try and find out how its done. The members were very warming to new blood and the set up is good. I felt at first out of my depth but now I fit in fine. We have 30 members ranging from 17 - 70+ and nobody tried to outshine another. Some are very good turners and some not so good but that doesn't matter and we encourage all work to be shown which most people do. I've learned a lot of my woodturning from this club and we've had some superb demonstrators in-house and professional. We've also done a few trips and the last one was to Axminster where we had a full day with a few demonstrations, shown around the factory and warehouse(much more interesting than it sounds) and all in all was great.

Because I'm in IT and the fact that anybody who does anything with computers knows all about them!!! I was asked and have now built the web site for the club. It might be a bit OTT but I've enjoyed giving back a bit to what I've gained from. Weston Woodturning Circle | A Woodturning Club in Weston-super-Mare

Am on the Whiteinch Ind Estate.
I had a look at Broxburn but like you say they always seemed full, plus I'm not a resident of that area so don't think I'd get in.

I think that any club has members that just want to come and do their thing and others that will do all the work and some are worse than others, with shooting clubs probably the worst. Being on a committee of a club is a thankless job but clubs do need all sorts of people. I don't even think about the ones that turn up and do their thing and leave without helping, that's what they want to do and I want to have a successful club so I do a bit extra. I guess it takes all sorts.

Take a guess
Clubs can be a nightmare, I went to one where practically no one spoke to me, the wife suggested that they all probably had impeccable taste :ave_it::ave_it:

But I do go to another club & have done for 4 or 5 years, I found if you stop behind & help cleaning up, volunteer to help with making the teas & generally be a little proactive you soon get recognised & accepted.
It does work both ways, if you don't make an effort then why should anyone else, that said folks can be very clicky & there are still some old boys who still don't talk to me but hay that's just life, you do tend to get out what you put in.

The main thing for me is that I enjoy seeing other folks turning regardless of their abilities, I rarely see a demonstrator & don't learn something new & for me that's what it's all about. Being creative is great in what ever way you choose & I'd far prefer to watch someone make something from a piece of wood than watch a little screen in the corner of the room.

Forever ago I joined a small group called the A.C.T Woodcraft Guild guess we had a few older members but a lot of us were young marrieds very busy people with lots of varied interests. Of course the bulk of fund raising finding locations to meet each month there was always plenty to do. I threw myself into had a few very close friends. I have had a wonderfull time in this group that grew to the present three hundred membership. My philosophy is you get from anything benefit if you contribute and volunteer. I have been a life member for a long time now and attend regularly the club has their own huge fully lined shed and the last word in gear. Fantastic oportunity to learn. Whatever gear they have I used to have two of and so I prefer to work in my own sheds in my own time.

I contrast this with joining a mens shed run by the Vietnam Veterans Association very sensitive PSDS suffering people hard to handle at times on joining I ticked a column saying I was interested in hospital visiting Vets and families so I opted out of the workshop hassles and became one of a team of visitors. Very rewarding just love it, I had to get a police clearance pass E Exams on ten subjects all worth it.

Our Wood group pioneered in this country SIG,s or special interest groups that meet separately each month join in with as many as you like eg Furniture Making, Blacksmithing, Scroll Saw, Restoration ,Tool group,Sharpening,Timber gathering,Turning several sub groups..Between Centres, Bowls. Penmaking small objects, Scroll Sawing Anto Fret cutting, Carving and many others such as Cane making (walking sticks) Musical Instrument making.. A refreshing gaze at the Aussie U beaut Forum also gives a new perspective on diversity this way.

I say look around examine you perceived needs figure out what you have to offer in Canberra the population of round 4 to 500000 people there are fifteen at least Mens Sheds an active Arts Community get in and have a go or as Woody says pick your mark find what suits you.

Sadly, I am a bit of a loner so no i wouldn't join a club to be honest .. But i am all for it in general and like to see places like this for people who are quite the opposite to what i am ..

Went along to the induction last night and ended up joining. Very well equipped I have to say and I have my eyes on the mortiser as I can think of one job for that which would more than cover the £10 annual fee and £1.50 per session!

I'm still debating about joining the men in sheds all they do is sit and talk about what they are going to do but nothing ever seems to get done I offered to sharpen all there chisels and plane irons after a debate about them and was informed that they were all chucked in a draw so I said that wasn't the best and safest way to store them and was promptly that's were they will live one guy wanted to be in charge of safety and after he was sawing a plank of 4 x 1 on the bench with a 3 foot over hang and the plank bouncing all over the place and got angry when I told him of the dangers so I haven't been since
