I found some holes in my ebony yesterday so I'm taking every piece of wood out of my shed and spraying it. I'm about 1/3rd of the way through. AGGGGHHHHH.

Fortunately I haven't found any other signs at the moment.

Woodworm in Ebony? Dont panic Paul, they've been there for a minimum of three years if they are indeed woodworm. Its unusual to find woodworm in ebony if it has been stored alongside other wood as they are very choosy about which timber they attack. The holes are made by the emerging adult beetle before they fly off to create havoc elsewhere. The eggs are laid on wood and the grubs bury their way into the wood leaving no trace before the adults create the typical 2mm holes as they emerge.

One of the best ways to detect woodworm is to place a piece of Alder as a sacrificial nest in your wood store and religiously burn it regardless of the detection of the little bastards every April. Out of choice Woodworm will attack Alder followed by Elm as their nest of choice. If you treat the wood in your store you will need to retreat every cut. Is that really worth it as they can quite easily fly in to your store, particularly if you live near parkland or any kind or forestation where they will happily infest dead branches.

Bad luck, I took great pleasure in sending many of the bastards skywards in smoke earlier this year, but there are still a few bits of elm that they have got their teeth into but strangely havent touched the alder!

Is this the same for all woods? I have a Yew log with holes in one end and a spindle length of Amazaque with a few holes in it.

Thanks Neil, I have found it strange that so far the only piece of wood in the shed to have holes is the Ebony but there is so much ash outside with woodworm I thought it was invevitable. It might be that my shed is so hot they're coming out now to do a bit of sunbathing :funny:

I'm happy to treat each cut as I don't do much where I then leave it and when I cut up a bunch of blanks I'll treat them.

Well I didn't manage to get any more sprayed as I had to have a go at a pen or two
