If i recall correct Dave, i am sure they are the same other than the area of where they come from as the Wych Elm only comes from a certain part of the country .. Hopefully someone more wiser than i will be more precise with the answer .. :thumbs:

In most cases, they are the same thing. Wych elm is one species of elm and these days it is the predominant one, the other species either being quite rare or having been decimated by Dutch Elm disease (e.g. English Elm, Dutch Elm, etc) so the vast majority of Burr Elm we see is in fact Burr Wych elm.
Jim is correct, the Wych elm is mainly found in the north of Britain.

Well you've lost me? :nooidea: I dunno which elm you're talking about anyway they burned all the witches in the middle ages. Up here in't north they're just called trees:whistling:

Here is a bowl from Scottish Wych Elm. It was a windblown sourced slightly north of Dunkeld.
Size is around 15" diameter and about 12" high. Hope you can see the green grain.
This was not turned by me. This was turned by a good friend in her earliest stages of learning to turn wood. I will leave it for her to tell the story if she wishes.

Wych large rough leaves Elm Wych elm large rough leaves living near water certainly no substitute for paper when taken short near a stream from an Elm tree. Word to the wise.
