Sorry couldn't resist the pun.

English Yew on a TB Fancy slimline kit.

The flash on the camera has washed out a bit of the colour I'm afraid, it's a bit deeper yellow in real life, blanks from ebay and I have another 4 to go at. CA finish 5 coats, micromeshed 12000 in between each coat.

Yew lucky devil....

It looks really nice piece of wood.

It looks from the picture as though you could afford to take a little more out of the center band area as from the picture the band looks a little recessed. might be an illusion of the flash.
Tried to enlarge but quality goes and difficult to see.

Nice work and goes really well with gold fittings.

Well done.

I'm wondering now ......

I used the bushings that came with the Rotur mandrel , could they be oversize?

Either that or im just chicken and daren't go further.

Chicken, no way. If you have have used the lathe, turned a pen as good and as close as that then the answer is a big fat NO.

You will find that the standard bushings on a Rotur Mandrel are just shy of 9.5mm. Some of the slimline pen kits are smaller. can be as much as 0.5mm.

Just to try and make things a little easier and closer I measure any new kits i have and measure the bushings as well with a digital caliper. (used to use none digital but the eyes are failing:vangry:)

As I have so many slimline bushings (old and new) that I have to measure them or face getting them wrong. Yes they do wear down a little if you are not a chicken.. :love_it:

Hi Phil.
The idea of rounding down at the bushes is to hide any inaccuracy you may have, the tip, cap finial or centre band will meet at some point and reduces the ridge so it's not so obvious a cock up.
My suggestion if you want to round off would be to take the bushes out altogether. slip the blanks back on the mandrel and then round off or just go over the middle again to get that extra shave off the centre where the band will go.
That also saves you sticking the bushes to the blank with the ca you are now going to apply.
Here I go gobbing off in Georges absence I promised I would introduce myself gently.

Nice pen by the way bugger all wrong with it in my eyes.
I forgot to add the answer what will now be your next question.
If I don't' got no bushes how am I gonna separate the blanks and hold them firm on the mandrel.
Cut a tube up and use for all the slimlines you do, simples init?

All my life I have heard the standing joke about Sheep there will never be another Yew on this site it is used ad infinitum Yew timber I mean and I say why not your pen is beautiful. To make an observation I turn with two calipers by my side one measured for the centre band and one I change for the tip and the band of the clip, this I do for every pen checking every kit I use cause I have hundreds of stripped kits in compartments so I can change centre bands, clip shape colours of components. After I made my first pen an old hand ran my pen between his fingers saying you never rounded the timber ends slightly and there are variations to be felt.

The grain is delerious love the golden colour another favourite habit of mine when I take pics I extend the biro as if and when I match the grain all the way it is in that position, whenever I show a pen I do it automatically every time.

Please always make your pens your way, think from time to time about using Streamline centre bands to give you fatter different Slims cheap as from Timberbits.

Kind regards Peter.:goesred:
