Following on from yesterday's thread I dug out a nice piece of Yew for a quick play...it had cream, brown and red within and a nice grain....
Ordered some Cherry too, let's see what it smells like when turning (cheers Ash)...

As per another comment, I wouldn't immediately have recognised this as Yew. It's a little darker than I would expect for Yew and the grain, too, is unusual. A lovely pen results so it just goes to show one can never be certain how a piece of wood will turn out. Can you advise, please, how you finished the pen?

Hi Nicholas,
My normal routine is melamine as per Phil Darts method....
Once turned and sanded I burnish with shavings, them wipe on Melamine laquer with a blue paper towel turning the lathe by hand. Leave to dry a couple of minutes, burnish with a clean towel and re apply another coat.....3-5 coats....if you put the prep in the results will show.
Melamine will harden fully overnight, but you can assemble pens before if your careful....
I have been trying Rubio monocoat which is very easy to apply and gives good results, but is best left alone to fully dry...

I love this one Mark. The colours work really well and that’s a lovely piece of timber.

The cherry will hopefully give off a nice fruity scent that will linger in the workshop for a while. It certainly does when turning bowls!

Cheers
Ash
