Hi

Has anyone got any views on these button jaws apparently 300mm Axminster ones although I guess now no longer sold by them.

I see them for sale locally at £60... are they a good bet or not?

That’s called a Longworth chuck, several places sell them:

Longworth Style Chuck 10" Ref Lsc10 RS/LSC10 from Westcountry Machinery 4 Wood

Button jaws are plates that fit onto a scroll chuck:

Button jaws have a higher clamping force than a Longworth chuck. Having used both I don’t like either, I’m going to try a Donut chuck next, as soon as I get round to making one.

This is a commercial one:

Whether it is the longworth chuck or cole jaws they are OK but I would tend to use the tailstock to hole the piece while any work is being carried out, you may get away with light cuts but great care should be taken all of the time. For a better hold then a doughnut chuck would be the better option but you will need to make them. The advantage of doughnut chuchs is that you can clean the bottom of nateral edged bowls with the addition of a jam chuck under the bowl.
All I use to clean the bottom of bowls is a jam chuck with the tailstock brought up with a ring centre. clean off as much as possible then take the little stub off by hand and sand

I had a set of 150mm jaws that Gold brought me for a presssie.. wasn't really big enough for what I wanted so brought the larger 250mm set.. sold the others on e bay.

I was using a home made one that Dad had made before, wasn't really confident with them and decided to get the proper thing..

I would say they are superb and great addition as I have been making some clocks and wanted to finish the backs smooth.

Not as simple to set up but very easy to use..

The ones I have are different to the Ines you show in the pic tho..:thinks:

I use my vacuum chuck or vacuum plate with tail stock up until the very end when I remove the little spigot, sand & finish.

With great care and slow speeds an excellent method of reverse holding to alter or finish the base of bowls.

Peter.

These are tools. As Peter said, and as it true for all tools, if used properly and with full awareness of the safety limitations, they can be very useful.

The general rule of thumb with both button jaws (aka Cole jaws) and Longworth chucks is that the maximum speed is around 600 r/min.
