    Stock Gaylard Oak Fair

I went there yesterday and it was a good day out with plenty of wood related stuff to look at. I was particularly impressed with many of the Pen makers. The last two I looked at chose to make pens using only native hardwoods and the looked very good. Of particular interest were the style and...

    Pot ( not for my stew ! ? )

My other half has offered to buy me a pot so I can learn and make my own blanks. We have loads of glitters and craft bits I can use inc colours. But ask to be pointed in a direction of a good company and recommended ‘pot’ for around £100ish please. If this is to low a budget I’m sure I can...

    Eye protector

Despite wearing goggles I still wasn’t keen on the bits of acrylic slapping my cheeks. Only seems to happen from the square to rounded off section then settles down. Looked at the ones online and seemed expensive so good old f bay and an online Perspex supplier slapped this on the top today...

    Taking photos of a pen

Feel free to join in folks - this is intended to be a "hints and tips from our mates" kind of thread. Several people on this forum have been extremely helpful to me personally over the years, in getting my photos sorted, so every now and then, its good to pass on some of the stuff we've learned...

    Emeri Wood Mistral

Hopefully this picture might be a little better, thanks to Derek. I made this for my Daughter's wedding. I wanted to put waterslide transfers on the cap but it did not look too good, so I will have to find some other way of engraving. Cheers Frederick

What makes a good winning pen?

Hi all, I was wondering what people look for when judging a pen. Is it curves, colour, type of wood/finish or design/model/make ? Obviously, the turning has to be good i.e no scrathes etc and the item fits together well. What do members especially looking for? Cheers Frederick

    Touch Screen caps

Can you get smaller touch screen caps. The reason I am asking apparently in some Call Centers the normal Screen Caps are no good for using on their normal key pads as they are too big. Glen

Well, there will be boxes after this one so I have started this as I will be making a few over the next week. So to start off a box in laburnum finished with sander sealer and woodwax22. I would have made two but I stopped to cook my good lady a meal for a change. I am also adding here a photo...

    metal sheets

I would like to incorporate copper/brass /aluminium into my pens and would appreciate guidance on the optimum thickness to use. The sheeting would be to highlight between two different woods. I would be grateful to know a good source. Thanks in advance Alan

    Casting Pictures

Hi all I am slowly losing the will to live now.:sob: I am trying to make a pen blank using a picture wrapped about the brass tube and then cast in Aluminite clear (Slow). I have now used two sets of chemicals as the results I am achieving are none too good, in fact they are awful. I mix...

    Never a good time

Just when I am getting into cutting my Walnut and Yew blanks into rounds the bandsaw breaks now I need to wait for a replacement. And I still have 11+ Yew blanks to cut as well as a good quantity of the Walnut most of them will be around the 9" to 12" once I get back and cut them.
