Just popping in to say hi from Ireland. Been turning for a good few years, began in '93. Been away from it for a few years and have taken up the chisels again a few months ago. Things have changed a lots in a few years! Turned my 1st pen around '97/'98 but haven't turned many over the years...
I have been experimenting with carbon fibre pen blanks and decided to try painting on resin to seal them, but I didn't fancy turning the tube by hand until the resin had set, so I made this jig to do it for me! Questions and comments welcome.
I am having trouble using the tailstock handwheel due to mussel problems with my hand, is there such a thing as a tailstock with a leaver. My lathe is a Jet.

I made this one a little while ago, but had left it unfinished. I finally got around to sanding (done by hand, so my least favourite part of making - hence why it had been left a while) and polishing it last night. Hand cast polyurethane resin.
This is one I have made for myself in Pink Ivory. Slightly chunky but that's what fits my hand and a little bit of writing with the new pen to go with it.
Attended the three monthly Hand Made Market again last Saturday met this lovely young lady with her stall. She is a Turner as her Dad is named. He is a beaut exquisite turner from Western Australia down near Margaret River in the bheart of incredible timber and top turners. From the stall...
If you go to the home page, you'll notice there's a column on the left hand side of the page. If you can't see it, click on the arrows on the far left, a little way down the page and it will "un-hide" itself.
I've put notices there on a few occasion in the past and I'm just interested to know...
I sold 3 pens in Australia this morning! I had sent a pen to my granddaughter, and one of her workmates saw it and eventually ordered 3 Chiyogami pens by email. As my wife and I were going to visit my daughter's family, I arranged to meet up and hand over the goods. She must have been impressed...
One of the many faces of this extraordinary timber rare as now from up north in Australia. Flashes of colour where the sapwood meets the heartwood. One of the worlds heavy dense timbers. Just a glimpse into the possibilities of these blanks. A famous maker in Aus of hand planes seeks out the...
I was making a pen today and i swap from a left hand hold on the chisel to a right hand hold without much trouble, in fact it feels a little more comfortable that holding it left handed.
It made me think though, i am going to have a go at bowl making. Turning the base of the bowl will be ok but...
So, I am starting up a Facebook page with a few of my pens to try and sell some, and was wondering this: do you rename your pens from the kit name?
I could use the kit name to describe my pens, but I suppose that could let people search for them, finding the kits themselves (and my profit...
Well I am sure someone will step up to the plate and show their hand..

Today I took delivery of my second lot of PE resin this time a 5 kg tub rather than the miserly 1 Kg tin that I ordered the other week. So seeing that I had decent quantity to play with I decided to put away the PVC piping and try my hand at block casting, I also though it time that I progressed...
Not so long ago I thought I'd have a go at pen turning, so I bought all the gear to try My hand,
this is what I ended up with, you can just make out the mistakes. :winking:
