    A quick trip to Axi

Hi All, I knew I was due a trip past so why not!! Thought I would compare the chisels against the Sorby version...and try the oil finish:thinks: I didn't get away too lightly, because as I was leaving this little lot caught my eye in the clearance box a little over £14 which I didn't think...

I’m not sure what this timber is. My peepers are so bad I can’t tell what a lot of timbers are now.

    Been a While

Been a while since I turned any acrylic and I am sure the last lot I did was not as brittle as this one. I think this will shatter if dropped :rolling:

    ***kin Olive

Hi All, I have a colleague who has a property in Cyprus, he has bought back some Olive wood for me to make pens with, well if these first two are anything to go by...... Its 500 years old and as dry as a prune, a lot of surface shakes and splits, so sharp tools, slow cuts and a liberal amount of...

    Coolmint

Hi pen people When I first started making pens I used to think it was important to try to "hide my workings", especially when using transparent or semi-transparent materials. I didn't like the fact, for example, that you may see the dark underside of the feed through the thin wall of a pen cap...

    Teaching

I don't post much on here now as most of my time is spent teaching other people to turn wood but I thought you lot might find this interesting. Woodturning has long been considered an "old men in sheds" type hobby / work / pastime, and generally, with the odd exception, that has proved to be...

    Hazel again

This is the other side of the blank that made the skinny bowl I posted recently. It was one of those pieces that actually started to warp and move as it was been turned, perfectly dry but obviously a lot of locked up forces in it that changed as wood was removed. Finished in food safe oil as I...

    Still alive

Hi All, Have not been here for a while. Been extremely busy. This virus thing has made a lot of difference. The mediocre businesses have fallen away. The good businesses have grown. Big business is avoiding overseas suppliers and using local suppliers instead. I am in the position where I have a...

    Lockdown entertainment

Just managed to watch one of the best documentaries I’ve ever watched on BBC. It’s about a Chinese couple who didn’t board Malaysian Airlines Flight 370, the one that disappeared, when they should have done. All sorts of conspiracy theories and a lot of never before published info. Well worth a...

Hello all. I only started woodturning fairly recently and have started making some pens. Finding them good for building confidence and consistency as they are achievable in fairly short windows of time. I do a lot of youth / young adult care and support work based on the family farm. I am...
