mandrel

Yesterday I treated myself to a MT2 Record pen Mandrel and noticed that it tightens the mandrel bar by means of a collet does this mean I can use other collets for holding small bits of work and if so what size of collet set do I need?

Can anyone explain this issue and suggest a solution. I am getting some shearing of the grain at the end of my blanks (see photo). Picture is not that clear, but its like the last 1mm of the grain has been squashed/ twisted if that makes sense? Note sure if the mandrel is causing this or is it...
