    Advice please

Hi All, I purchased last year a second hand, hardly used , record power dml 24x mk1 (the blue one) lathe. It runs but as soon as I present the cutting tool to wood it stalls, motor hums, replaced capacitor and tighter belt, to no avail and now vibration . My plan for the new year is total...

    Saved from the flames!

So this time last week one of my wood scouts turned up with this! It was all he could get as apparently the rest had been put on a bonfire!:vangry: Turns out it had been, but the bonfire hadn't been lit! The wood fairy drove out there today in atrocious weather, waded through 6" thick...

    Early Christmas present to myself.

DeWalt DW733 thicknesser, I just couldn't turn this down as it's a steal at £150. Not brand new but only used a handful of times so as good as, not a mark on it. He uses a variety of highly figured exotic wood and has offered to keep suitable offcuts for me as well - happy days.

    Snowdrop tree

A simple little bowl in a wood that was most pleasing to turn. The bowl is 4" x 2 1/4" and is made from the wood of the Snowdrop tree, (Halesia sp. ,possibly H. dipteria.) It was standing dead for a year but only felled yesterday.

    Another Newbie!

Although I’m new to the forum I’ve been turning pens on a casual basis since last year. I’ve been working with wood for years and scratch build our home furniture and spend many hours wood turning in general. I’m fortunate to have good power tools in my “man cave” which is my second home now...

    Blank Maker

Hi, I'm a tree surgeon who recently got into knife making and started sawing up some of the interesting bits of wood that we have in the yard. I started shopping on line for bits and bobs and discovered there's a whole world of blanks from all kinds of wood not just for knives but for pens and...

    Olive Wood

Mornin' all, Does anyone have any preferences when finishing Olive wood for pens? I like this wood especially the colour, but adding finishes seems to distract from the look. I am aware that all finishes change the appearance to some degree but I need something that is less "intrusive" if that...

Christmas is coming and the geese.......

There is a moth in France whose caterpillars are devastating the boxwoods all around, it can be got rid of, but many people are just ripping up their hedges and giving me the wood so I have found a use for the thinner branches. 8 down 32 to go!! a few Xmas tree decorations :winking:

    Lucky boy

Sitting in the living room thinking what shall I make or do this morning and I get a phone call. "I have some lengths of hardwood are you interested" well 10 minutes later I am in the car on the way out picked up said wood and I am very happy as I now can repair a couple of garden benches. And...

    Unknown wood

I am not sure where this came from but I have a couple of pieces of this and this is the first to be turned. I tried to keep the form simple to show off the wood. A nice simple finish of sander sealer and beeswax which I brought off of a local beekeeper who mixes it with a hard wax possibly...

    Beech Platter

THis is my first effort in wood colouring so I thought I would aim for something simple. I bought a 12 x 2 blank from Axminster. It sat in the workshop for weeks before I could start it. When I finally started it I attached the face plate but again had to put it to one side as time was limited...

    Fishing.

Hi All, This is a pattern I found by Grampa on Scroll saw village forum Wood is Cedar of Lebanon. I planed it down to 6mm. The smell from this wood is amazing. I used a Olsen 2/0 blade for the pattern changing to a No5 for the fishing line. It is a great pattern but I managed to mess it up...
