reading the write up, I think the idea is that the 306 gives more of a traditional building site hard hat protection

544 grams for the 106 compared to 832g for the 306

Steve - when I bought my 3M, I visited Axminster to make sure I was getting the right thing. I discovered an unseen difference in the two helmets, which is that the webbing skull cradles are completely different. I bought the 306 for the sole reason that the 106 did not feel that it would stay securely on my head, whereas the 306 is deeper and far more adjustable.

My advice, for what it's worth, given that you will be shelling out soooo much money, is to do the same if you can, and visit somewhere that stocks both helmets so you can try them on. They fit and feel completely different.

Phil makes an excellent point. Any protection is only of use if you wear it and comfort is the key to doing that. What may suit one person may not suit another. I use an Airflow and yes it is heavy, but then I am quite used to it so it does not bother me. If I ever replace it I will certainly try and find somewhere I can try the alternatives on.

Remember the cost of the Axminster one does not include the power pack (the fan and filter assemnly) it's the head unit only.:nonono: you have to select that separately ..

Comparing the Trend Airshield and 3M Versaflo is a bit like comparing apples and pears!

The Trend Airshield (manufactured by Helmets Ltd) is the Purelite XStream respirator re-badged and if I remember correctly it has a smaller capacity battery. This respirator has two integral TH2P filters. Everything is contained within the respirator so there are no trailing hoses.

The 3M Versaflo is more of a respirator system. The powered unit is worn on a belt which makes the head top very light.

Both respirators have pro's and con's.

Purelite XStream / Trend Airshield
Pros
Everything is supplied in a box. Simply charge and install filters.
No trailing breathing tubes.
Cheaper than 3M Versaflo.
Filters are easy to replace.
Cons
Although the mask is not heavy you are still wearing the battery, fan etc on your head!

3M Versaflo
Pros
Sometimes the breathing tube will snag on objects.
Can be used with an array of different head tops.
Cons
Can be expensive
Items sold separately. You will need to purchase a starter kit (3M TR-315) and also a head top.

I have a Trend Airshield Pro, I am very happy with it took me a while to get used to the weight on my head, I am glad I didn't the 3m one with the hose hanging down my back would have got cought on every thing in my crowded shed.
