I made up another 'window' blank last night (with clear acrylic rod inserted crosswise prior to drilling) and mounted it on the lathe for drilling. I had decided to start with a smaller diameter bit (9mm), then pulled the tailstock back and swapped for the 11mm bit. Pushed the tailstock forward towards the blank and - BANG! I had forgotten to switch off the lathe, and the drillbit just blew the front half of the blank apart ...

... So I called it a night and went inside for a whiskey.

I feel for you, it is a momentary lack of concentration, I had one as well last night. I was assembling a Executive Clicker and forgot to put the clip on, I then spent the next 2 hours trying to work out how to take it apart without damaging the click mechanism.

Take a guess
Shit happens David, I`ve been trying segmenting with thicker aluminium than the coke can ally I used before, my first blank separated at the ally wood joint & shot across the workshop half way through turning it, :banghead::banghead: back to the drawing board, going to try epoxy instead of CA :thinks:

Done that a few times, Doug! Nothing quite like crawling around on hands and knees sifting through the sawdust for the missing piece, is there?

"Aha, another finished pen! Wait a minute - what's that clip doing there? Oh £&@#!"

I can imagine how it felt, Peter - although I've never done it myself, of course ...

I once payed $30 for a custom cast acrylic blank. I drilled it and started turning it. All was going great until suddenly the whole blank suddenly exploded off the lathe. I couldn't figure out what had happened until I started looking at the pieces. I hadn't glued a tube in the blank :nooidea:
