I recently opened my big fat gob and had to put my money where my mouth is, ended up buying one of these to add to the never used pile of poo I already have.
I opened it after seeing this thread again and shoved it in my moocheene, I have to ask these questions before continuing:
Do you have a dial gauge? do you use it?
I have and do, and the results will frighten you talking of accuracy.

it depends how accurate you need them to be. for high accuracy, a piece of silver steel in a collet chuck and make your own mandrels. doesn't cost much if you already have a collet chuck, but is rather expensive if you don't.

very useful things though, collet chuck...

You can buy collet chucks on eBay for about £9 posted from Hong Kong. Plus the cost of collets of course which are normally around a couple of quid each.

Have you got a link for these?
I am after a ER 40 chuck and collet set.

BTW if you buy a collet chucks get at lest a ER32 not ER25 like I did,

ER25 Collet Set 1-16MM-15 Pcs.
ER32 Collet Set 2-20MM- 19 Pcs.
ER40 Collet Set 2-26MM- 24 Pcs.

I had a tiny lathe like yours many years ago show us a pic of yours close up I may have some solutions I made my own Mandrel saver for my Taig lathes easily using Brass I can dig up pics etc I then fine drilled the mandrel saver to suit the mandrel in use I used a small end mill kicked at an angle as a boring tool for accuracy.

Next step IMHO is a bigger lathe with 2 morse taper both ends for progress.

I was thinking more of ER20 just for pen turning similar to those sold by Axi.

If you want something bigger then there are ER32 MT3 for about a tenner on there.
If you go up to ER32 or bigger though the cost of the collets triple.

I've already got a set of ER32 collets so I'll probably try and get a MT2 ER32 but for some reason this combination is more expensive at about £18?!

I've begun to look for an alternative adjustable mandrel to the Planet de Luxe, which I don't rate. I see that Dan does one for £15.00 and Axminster does one for almost £37. Does anyone who has used one know if the Axminster is worth the extra money or whether it is a rip off? I would define 'worth the extra money' as being better constructed to finer tolerances.

I was hoping to buy a mandrel saver at the same time, but the tailstock of my Sherline lathe has a #0 Morse taper and, as far as I can see, nobody seems to make one that would fit my Sherline lathe.... unless, of course, anybody knows any different!

Why not talk to Dan he will give you a measurement on what he sells you can give him measures on what you seek saves a lot of guessing.

Peter.

Once you start using collets you will wonder how you got by with out them, I found 16 mm is too small for me.:thinks:

Not used for pen turning - yet, but I've been using ER32 collets on my MW Lathe and Milling machine. I also have several collet blocks and a Spindexer that takes them.

Keep an eye on the ER32's at Axminster, as they sometimes have huge sales on single ER32's ..
