Mark,
Phil is on the same lines. The point about taking the blanks of the lathe mid process is that you can sometimes find that this will mean that you get a little vibration with a mandrel. a benefit of turning between centres! As for applying a friction polish before a CA finish, this has several detrimental effects. If you put the friction polish on with a sealer (as you should with any friction polish, Record included!) then the sealer, if you have used liquid sealer, will probably discolour the wood i, as in this case the wood is Walnut. Liquid sealer makes a right mess of zebrano and spalted beech as other examples. The spray versions are smellier but much better. Once done and you then apply a friction polish? The polish will inhibit the bonding of the CA as will the sealer in the first place. You want the first layer of CA to slightly absorb into the surface of the wood, it also accentuates the grain and colouration of the wood.
If you havent used a sealer and put a friction polish on then,as you mention, clean it off with a solvent before putting CA on, all you have effectively done is put a messy combination on the pen that achieves nothing.
If it works for you thats great, but I do think that the process that you have evolved for yourself is rather ineffective.
All written, of course, in my opinion!
