Yes quite right. We have a portable AC unit for the house but I generally don’t drag it out of the cupboard unless we get more than two or three days of “summer”.

Yes it does help when it’s really hot. The only problem is you need somewhere to put the hot exhaust pipe and the pipe itself is not very long on these units.

To be honest if we got two or three weeks of really hot weather every year I’d buy a proper Air Conditioning unit for the living room, they aren’t desperately expensive the last time I looked.

I use a dehumidifier rather than aircon. My rationalle is that it's the humidity that kills you, and if the air is dry the heat is more tolerable. I get to use it all year round too, because most days you don't need aircon but there is always a need to keep a dry atmosphere in good ol' Blighty

Last year having to teach in high heat was a pain. I made it more bearable by freezing a couple of bottles of tap water and had them sat in a tray behind a small fan. This apparently cools the air by evaporation in some way but doesn't work if it's already high humidity. I can't afford a proper air con unit so opted for the posh version of the above set up.

Hmmm I have to keep the doors closed to stay at 35 when its 45 outside as per last Wednesday!! Today is cool at 29 so I could open them, the shavings still stick to me though!!
