I have quite a few British friends, so I can avoid many of the pitfalls of posting on a British forum. But if I make a mistake, please correct me.
A funny story...years ago I was managing a restaurant in a large shopping mall in Phoenix. At the time, it was the largest indoor mall west of the Mississippi river, and a big tourist attraction. A tour bus of British tourists stopped at the mall, and a small group of them found their way into my small restaurant. I made it a point to greet them and welcome them to Arizona. One of them asked me where another store was in the mall and I told her to go down to the lift and up to the first floor. She looked at me in amazement, and blurted out "You speak English!" (In America we would have said "go down the elevator and go up the the second floor). I don't know what she thought most of us spoke, but it obviously WASN'T English!
