Actually, I use a barrel trimmer. Which in this case is a piloted end mill with a letter D drill blank and the adapter sleeves. And no CA finish, just wet sanding, wet Micromesh, and Meguiar's PlastX polish.
Thanks for the pics and details your trimmer sure works well. like the v cuts in the vice way to go. I remember when Jim used to turn pens along the lines of your pen he changed the style by making the lower part of the pen fatter to the top junction which gives a smoother transition from the top to the bottom most successful.The second last pic in the first series the piece of blank next to the break out is so wide it gave the impression of trimming on the lathe. The instructions I found on the making of these pens stated leave the turning proud on to the bushes the sand to the bushes confused me also as you turned to the bushes before sanding re the last pic first series.
You preface first pen of various kits I like this having a go its much easier for me to simply say great pen I sense good turning and finishing in your work you also say you have been turning for so many years lots of firsts to be proud of.
