Only one I've seen similar is Spalted Beech and that was very punky.....

Could it be holly David.
Apple is a strong contender looking at some bark types.

By some form of elimination my vote goes for ash.
In my opinion,
It's not Apple, wrong colour and apple doesn't splat like that
Sycamore, because it's not,
Holly, nope
Beech, don't think so as it would be more coloured if it was that pinky.
Punky and slightly spalted indicates a slow colouring timber when it spalts, beech and particularly silver birch do it reasonably quickly, holly takes time but generally remains white and greys but can go green.
The bark of young trees or branch wood can be very deceiving but there are one or two tail tell signs that points me towards ash.
But then again I could be wrong.

Neil, looking at Alex's spalted Ash box thread I'm pretty sure this is NOT ash ... It looks nothing like Alex's? Ah well, it's good timber whatever we call it!

David, True it doesnt look like alex's box, but I have got a whole heap that does! But whatever, if it makes something good so what?
dont forget that piece of ash my box was made from came for a tree that was massive so it will look different
