i have the axi mandrel saver
i also have the axi deluxe adjustable
all tb bushes are a bit slack
i ordered the tb mandrel shaft which does fit the axi adjustable
but......
the axi bushes do not fit the tb shaft
the axi saver will slide over thread but not go along tb shaft

i was hoping to turn the shaft and not see the thread but this is not the case
i am tempted to try and open up the inside of my mandrel saver ....if i knew how

Hmmmm.

I have just tried the Axminster Evolution Series Quick Change Pen Centre on mandrels from Turners Retreat (Evolution9), Penn State Industries and Planet/Rotur as well as Axminster's own mandrel and it fits all of these with no problem. I also tried it on a brand new Rotur mandrel shaft just in case any of my mandrel shafts were worn and it fits that perfectly too. I somehow don't think it is Axminster's tolerances that are the problem and drilling out a perfectly good centre so that it fits an oversize shaft seems like a bad idea to me. But that is just my opinion, you drill away, it's your tool you are ruining.

This is my old one..

I like what they say about there compression mandrel..

"Compression Pen Mandrel is a big step forward in mandrel design"

So when my dad brought ours it must have been a "massive step forward in mandrel design"

craft supplies mandrell saver.JPG

Similar in design just need a revolving center with a hole in.. init.init.. I think i mean init..

I agree with Walter on this one.. However, just checked my old axminster shaft and slid some new Dayacom bushes on it and they do feel a little looser than they do on the rotur mandrel. :thinks: Not got any axminster ones so I don't know how they fit.

Nothing new in this world Eamon. :bwink:

As I say in my post above, the tolerances do vary quite a lot between brands.

Digital callipers are regularly 0.2mm out between sets init.
Don't rely on them to be accurate, especially if they came from Ebay, toolpost, Aldi etc.
Size it up with a gnats cock too and double check init???

i can slide my bushes over the 6.5 mm bit i have ...so i guess that is not accurate..but is snug
i can slide my bushes over my tb mandrel but snug
i cant fit my 6.5mm bit thru saver

something has to give

That makes a great deal of sense, go ahead and drill away.
If it goes wrong just say Walter told you to init?

Do you not have a vice on your pillar drill to hold it with?
Do you have a pillar drill?
Make a Heath Robinson jig with a pair of vice grips and a block of wood and drill on the lathe very carefully and slowly init?
No vice grips commonly called Mole grips?
Use a pipe wrench (stilsons), don't have one of those.
Make one with a leather belt and a stick.
They will all hold it while you drill init?

Why not? I get the blame for most things. :sob:

As I say, it is your decision Steve. Personally I would buy a replacement mandrel shaft that fits the mandrel saver so that I could always be able to use the mandrel saver with any of the mandrels from the major suppliers without if flapping around like a pair of Anne Widdicombe's knickers. However if you are certain you will only ever use it with the oversize TB shaft then go for it.

There, I have said it so you can blame me. :mooney2:

Or you could throw the whole lot away and turn between centres like a grown up. :ave_it:

Steve, if you are going to drill your bushes then you have the axminster deluxe mandrel to help you, take the shaft out and get the correct size collets that will accept your bushes and fit the deluxe mandrel and at least it should be more accurate than doing it on a pillar drill. In fact I had forgotten about the deluxe mandrel also being a collet chuck, I could have made the closed end mandrels to fit in that instead, I will have to knock one up to try it out.

That is a good idea Peter, but it is the mandrel saver that Steve is planning to drill out, not the bushes.

I have completely misunderstood, but at least I have jogged an idea into my head about the deluxe mandrel:thumbs:

Mine too, I keep forgetting it is a collet chuck. Now just need to remember where I put the other collets. :nooidea:

I was thinking about where mine were and I have just realised I had planned to buy them, but hadn't got round to it yet, so I will order them today, if I don't forget:thumbs:

RDG tools have a set that are a lot cheaper than Axminster's

SET OF ER20 COLLETS (12 PIECE)

Thanks for that, but I have a full set of ER32 collets for the metal lathe so for the wood lathe I will just buy the ones I will most likely use or just buy 1 and make everything fit that. Apparently the Axm. Deluxe Mandrel used to be ER32 that why I bought it, but by then they had downsized it to ER20, if anyone has the ER32 for sale I am in the market.
