Brian, I have a load of Elm burr and this looks nothing like it, so I doubt it's elm. Probably one of the mallees ...

Thanks for showing them David I now know I wont be buying any of those kits nicely turned and finished but I agree with you the kits look crap

I bought five of them in a pack from fun-e-turnz, made one and swore never to touch them again. Then my brother bought the old gits - er, I mean old folks an iPad each, and promised them styli on my behalf ...

On seeing again on the crap pens I agree it's nothing like Burr Elm dunno what made me think that must have been the beer at lunchtime init?
Does look like brown Malee but what do I know it ain't plywood I know that.
