What a great response guys, that's given me loads to think about/research.
One other problem which I have living where I do is that several products can't be courier on to the island due to safety reasons on on the ferries, this includes things like sanding sealer and microcrystalline wax! So I'll be a bit restricted on what I can use until I go south and visit a few shops.
Anyway, off to re-read all this and look up some of the links etc.

I presume you mean take the ferry to go shopping does that mean you have to smuggle it aboard to get it back

Well I don't know about smuggle, its just unfortunate that loads of other stuff get stacked on top of it
It didn't used to be an issue, royal mail would ship most things, then someone thought it was a good idea to privatise them 
Still, I do get to live here
